Museum visits on a budget: free days, memberships and what to skip

Many museums are free or cheap if you know the rules. A guide to working out when a membership pays off and how to see more by seeing less.

Museums can be an inexpensive day out, but entry prices vary from nothing to the cost of a restaurant meal.

Check whether it's already free#

Many national and city museums charge no entry for their permanent collections, with charges only for special exhibitions. Some others have free days or free evenings each month. Check the museum's official website, not an aggregator page, because opening hours and pricing change.

Look for concessions#

Students, children, seniors and unemployed visitors are often eligible for reduced prices. Some places offer discounts for local residents, and some libraries lend free or discounted passes. Bring proof of eligibility.

When a membership pays off#

Divide the membership cost by the entry price. If a membership costs the price of three visits and you'll go four times, it pays for itself. Check what else is included: guest passes, reduced exhibition tickets, shop discounts and reciprocal entry at other museums. Some memberships are fully tax-deductible donations in certain countries, but check local rules.

City passes#

Tourist passes bundle entries and transport. They are worth it only if you'll visit enough places, and the pass includes the ones you want. Add up the individual prices first, and don't assume you'll manage five museums in a day.

A common mistake is to try to see everything. Pick two or three rooms and spend time with them. Many museums publish highlights or trails. Short visits, repeated, stay in memory more than one exhausting marathon.

Plan around the crowds#

Weekday mornings and late afternoons tend to be quieter. Book timed tickets where they are required. Check bag restrictions and cloakroom costs.

Skip the extras#

The audio guide, the café and the shop add up. Many museums provide free guides online or through their app. Bring a water bottle if it's allowed.

Support what you value#

If you enjoyed it and can afford to, consider a donation or joining. Free admission is paid for somehow, and a small contribution helps keep it going.
