A carry-on-only packing list that works for a week or a month
Packing light saves baggage fees and time at the airport. A method that scales, and the things people over-pack.
Hand luggage only means no baggage fees, no waiting at the carousel and no lost suitcases. It works for trips of any length if you pack by system.
Check the airline's limits first#
Carry-on size and weight allowances differ between airlines, and budget carriers can be strict, sometimes allowing only a small under-seat bag for the base fare. Check the exact dimensions and any weight limit before you buy a bag or a ticket, and measure your bag.
The method#
Pick a colour palette so everything mixes. Then pack by categories:
Tops: 4 to 5, mixing short and long sleeves.
Bottoms: 2 to 3, one of which suits cooler evenings.
Layer: a light jacket or jumper that goes over everything.
Underwear and socks: 5 to 7 of each. You'll wash.
Shoes: one comfortable pair on your feet, and at most one more.
Sleepwear and swimwear as needed.
Plan to wash#
For a trip longer than a week, pack for a week and wash. A small bottle of travel detergent, a sink and a hanging line, or a laundrette visit, mean a month needs no more than a week.
Toiletries#
Many airports limit liquids in hand luggage, typically containers of 100ml in a clear bag, though rules vary and are changing in some places, so check the airport's guidance. Solid shampoo, toothpaste tablets and refillable travel bottles help. You can buy basics at your destination.
Electronics#
Pack a universal adapter, a charger with several ports and a power bank. Power banks must be in hand luggage, not checked bags. Check airline limits on capacity.
What to leave behind#
"Just in case" outfits.
Several pairs of shoes.
Bulky towels. Many places supply them.
Books. Use an e-reader or your phone.
Pack in a fixed order#
Roll or fold flat, put heavy things near the wheels, and use packing cubes if they help you find things. Do a dry run at home a few days early. If you struggle to carry it for twenty minutes, take something out.
Plan for souvenirs#
Leave a little space, or plan to post items home. A bag stuffed to the zip on day one leaves no room for the trip.
