Hotels: book direct or through a comparison site?
Booking sites are good for searching and sometimes for prices. Direct booking often wins on flexibility and perks. How to check both in ten minutes.
There's no single answer, but there is a quick way to find yours.
Use sites to search, then check direct#
Comparison and booking sites show many hotels in one place, which makes them useful for finding options. Once you've picked a hotel, visit its own website and compare the total price for the same room, dates and cancellation terms. Often they're similar, and sometimes direct is cheaper or adds extras.
Why direct can be better#
Changes and problems are simpler to resolve with the hotel itself, with no third party in between.
Loyalty programmes may give points, upgrades or free breakfast for direct bookings.
Member rates may be lower for signing up for free.
Special requests reach the hotel more reliably.
Why a site can be better#
Package deals that combine flights and hotels.
Genuine discounts during promotions.
One account to manage many bookings.
Free cancellation filters make flexible options easy to find.
Compare like with like#
Check the room type, breakfast, taxes and fees, and city or resort charges that may be paid at the property. A price that excludes taxes is not comparable with one that includes them. Check the currency too.
Read the cancellation terms#
Free cancellation up to a date is worth a lot. If plans may change, book the flexible rate and set a reminder before the deadline. Non-refundable rates are cheaper because you carry the risk.
Read recent reviews#
Sort by newest, not just top rated. Look for repeated comments about noise, cleanliness and location. A few bad reviews are normal, but a pattern isn't.
Ask for a better deal#
A short email or call to the hotel sometimes yields a room upgrade, late checkout or a better rate, especially off-season. Be polite and specific.
After you book#
Keep the confirmation, and check the booking reference with the hotel a few days before arrival if you booked through a third party.
