Buying a mattress without the showroom: what a sleep trial really means

Online mattresses come with trial periods and firm promises. Here is how to read the terms, pick a firmness and avoid being stuck with a heavy return.

You cannot lie down on an online mattress before you buy it. The sleep trial is meant to replace that, but the details differ more than the headlines suggest.

Read the trial terms line by line#

Look for: how many nights the trial runs, whether there is a minimum number of nights before you may return it, whether returns are free, how it is collected and whether you get a full refund or only credit. Some brands ask you to keep the mattress for a few weeks first, because bodies take time to adjust. Others charge a collection fee.

Pick firmness by sleeping position#

Firmness labels are not standard across brands, so treat them as guidance. As a general rule:

  • Side sleepers often prefer medium to soft, which lets shoulders and hips sink in a little.

  • Back sleepers often prefer medium to medium-firm.

  • Front sleepers usually need firmer support to keep the spine level.

Heavier people generally need a firmer build than lighter people to get the same feel.

Know the types#

Foam hugs the body and isolates movement. Pocket sprung is bouncier and breathes more. Hybrid mixes both. None is better in the abstract. Foam can sleep warm for some people, and spring mattresses can be heavier to move.

Look at the layers#

A brand should tell you what is inside. Vague talk about "premium comfort layers" without materials or foam density is a flag. Ask for the thickness of each layer and the cover fabric.

Size, delivery and the base#

Measure doorways and stairs. Foam mattresses often arrive rolled in a box, and spring mattresses may not. Check that your bed base suits the mattress, since slatted bases should have slats set close together.

Sale prices#

Mattress retailers run permanent sales. If a listing always shows a deep discount, the "was" price is not a useful guide. Compare similar mattresses across a few sellers and judge on the specification you actually get.

Our checklist#

Trial length and conditions, who pays for collection, materials listed in full, warranty length and what voids it, and a sale price you have compared elsewhere. If the terms are hard to find, treat that as an answer.
